Two Poems by Mitali Chakravarty

1

Momentary

There was again

that beautiful sunrise

with god-rays searing

the sky in fiery shades.

The summer heat beats

down each morning to a

muggy, equatorial day

sweating sluggishly.

But for a moment,

for just a moment,

the sunbeams glimpsed

the wondrous smile of

a young child. Redolent

with hope, the sky sighs.

2

Legacy

While you and I cling

to legends of old, the new

unfold to blood red skies,

where missiles like birds fly.

The young locked in insta

and TikTok, survive with

small talk, try to forget the

larger divides with Discord.

For them, we polluted the air,

water and land. We fenced

ideas and ideals, created

brands, glorified hate and war.

Their legacy, as it stands,

bereft of compassion, of heart,

looks for a change, a revival

of self-worth and love. Kindness.
