Human/Animal Bonding stories

Human/Animal Bonding stories

Stories of man and animal bonding has been a part of every culture, with many dynamics to this relationship. We are looking for translations of stories into English from any Indian or foreign language that depicts human and animal bonding as companions, emotional anchor, friend, offering unwavering loyalty and unconditional affection. There are many such stories …to name a few…in Bengali we have Sarat Chandra Chatterjee’s “Mahesh”, in Hindi Premchand’s “Atmaram”. Stories such as Saddat Hussain Manto’s “Kutta” critique the anthropocentric attitude towards animals and lay bare the inhumane fissures of a society which ironically exposes the inhumanity in the humans in comparison to the animal.

Translators will have to get permission for translation if they are translating stories that come within the purview of copyright (if author is alive or 60 years has not elapsed from his/her death.)
The view that humans are superior to animals is problematic and has been challenged by stories that depict the integrated and interdependent lives of man and animals.

The recent rulings of the Supreme Court regarding stray dogs and the public furor leading to the changes in the rulings to more humane and compassionate handling of the dogs foreground the changing attitudes towards animals. Man’s behaviour towards animals is a measure of his own humanity or the lack of it.

These stories critique or resist the anthropocentric world view that animals matter only if they benefit human beings. In today’s world where people have less time and resources to nurture human children a few are taking care of animals of their choice to express their love.
