Beirut
At night,
It occurred in my dreams
like a splash of pigeon wings
The city’s mirrors
have a memory,
the more one sees
into them, the more they look like
their older selves.
The roads have a throbbing traffic
They snake away, and jump into
the Mediterranean
like a frantic insomniac
frightened of the CIA
The stones of the city
They have a past too
For the ones who can listen
They whisper the songs
from the eras of Phoenicians
Like many cities of the world
Beirut has people too,
their eyes ebb like restless seas
When a bomb falls from the sky
their eyes, enraged, torch empires.
