Disturbed Night

Naresh Kumar aka Sufi is currently a sub-editor for a Telugu daily named ‘Velugu’. In his words, he hails from a land that he cannot claim as his, from the golden lands of Singareni. He hasn’t had too much education; he has read the few books his father has bought for him. His career started from working in salons to repairing drilling equipment, and now is a sub-editor.

I was punished this night –
For a loneliness that lingered still;
For not holding on to the sole, sorrowful melody

Like a body turning over and over
The metro rolls on in a deafening rattle
The grief of my death comes forth in the cries of a rudaali
As I dance in the fantasies of a baaraath of the river Moosi

O outcasted love of mine!
My forehead longs for a kiss from you
To heal the pain of the hidden wounds
That entomb my being

The violet eyes of the lamp posts staring down,
Pierce the eyeballs
And I for one, keep looking for you
O my love, the one who bears poison in her eye,
In the darkness of my shut eye, I keep looking for you.

A shadow wafts with Irani smells
And bears the moon over Charminar
The city is a bird cage of flightless pigeons
And I am that butterfly
Which graces the tomb
Engraved with patterns
Of a lone peacock feather
