Naina Dey is a poet renowned for her craft all over the country and abroad. She has been on the literary scene for long. Her poems reflect strong responses to the world around her especially in relation to women’s issues. Her verses have a feminist oeuvre, are bold, satirical and hard hitting. She exposes the inherent hypocrisies and contradictions in society that make discrimination a given in a patriarchal society. Yet she is doesn’t lose hope and versifies her trust in nature, music and poetry to bring change and ease the ‘dis-eased’ minds for a better world.
1. NO ONE CAME
No one came
when he beat her black and blue
Marriages are made in heaven
No one came
when the family of foursome
bid farewell to a life of shame
No one came
when they rammed into her every orifice
her screams rending the air
The beggar boy picks a loaf
from the window ledge
They all came
2. A HYMN TO HOPE
Let tulips bloom
from the blood
of battered hearts and veins
Let music water
the tender shoots of hope
that peer from the crevices
of lonely days
Let poetry bridge
the distance
between dis-eased minds
Cement our resolve
for a world full of grace
Let us have Light
after a night of pain.
