Sutanuka Ghosh Roy’s Two Poems

Sutanuka Ghosh Roy is a poet who dons many feathers and so is in the here and there at any given moment. Her verses speak volumes about the multifaceted world a modern woman walks in and weaves the beauty and synchronicity of her world into vivid poetry. She employs subtle metaphors, evocative images and colours to convey meaning. Her poems depict the unfailing commitment and energy of a woman to her home and work. Maacher jhol without ada bata?

in aloo posto, add

a blob of mustard oil just

before taking it out of the kadai

 

the fugitive mind..

with million perforations

 

a

stale refrigerated dough

forlorn

on the kitchen counter.

 

 

Macher Jhol: fish stew

Ada bata: ginger paste

Aloo posto: a popular Bengali cuisine made of potato and poppy seeds

Kadai: cauldron

The tired evening dragged itself

to the doorstep

finds the old photo frame

holding a sepia-coloured family photograph

tilted.

The brown coffee marks

refuse to leave the yellow table runner

the garlic pods tightly embrace the kitchen faucet

putting the laptop on charge

quickly apply the makeup brush

conceal the knee pain

and receive myself.
