Meenakshi Mohan’s Two Poems

1

Birth of a poem

when my heart flutters with emotions

my brain plays scrabbles with words

what I see leads me to ponder and pause

gently thoughts start to flow

images form a glow

the seeds of poems gradually grow

a fallen leaf, brown and frail

has a long and lonely tale

the ocean waves scribble a story to tell

a pile of pebbles, plain and stark

can whisper stories in the dark

vagabond clouds become a hard rock

then, my poem slowly begins to unfold

my pen, then dances free and bold,

and a new poem takes its hold.

Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal ata hai: If only life were a book

If only life were a book,

I would go back to the pages

Where you and I started

Newlywed, new country, new life

But with you on my side was all that I needed.

If only life were a book,

I would go back to the pages

Where your kiss was ethereal

Like dew drops on the newly born bud.

If only life were a book,

I would go back to the pages

To my first cherry blossoms in my pink sari

Where flowers bent down to greet us.

If only life were a book,

I would go back to the pages

Where we drove in the wilderness

To get lost.

If only life were a book,

I would go back to the pages,

Where we tried new recipes

And arguing about who is a better cook.

If only life were a book,

I would go back to the pages

Where we roamed through the world

Laughed, enjoyed, and were carefree.

If life were a book

I would go back to the pages

Where you read your poems to me at bedtime

And your soothing recitation lulled me into deep sleep.

If life were a book

I would go back to the pages

Where your eyes spoke of love

And you told me that you liked seeing twinkles in my eyes.

Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khyal ata hai —

If only I could get back that twinkle in my eyes.

If only I could hold on to you

If only I could shut my eyes to the long-lost deep slumber

Kabhi kabhi!!
