In this issue I’d like to introduce one of the most acclaimed poets of India and abroad by name Swapna Behera from Odisha. She received numerous awards and accolades for her contribution to English literature besides Odia. One of her poems titled “A Night in the Refugee Camp” has been translated into more than 60 languages (Indian & Foreign languages) which came as a volume with my review of the poem. —–Vasudev
Swapna Behera born in 1955 is a multilingual contemporary poet, author, educationist ,critic translator, reviewer, social worker and editor from Odisha ,India. Her stories, poems and articles are widely published in Newspapers, International journals , magazines Anthologies, ezines and translated into different languages .
Swapna Behera is a former teacher for more than three decades at the Mont Fort School from 1984-1995 and a teacher in Kendriya Vidyalaya, from 1995-2015 under Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan ,an Autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India .She has received outstanding recognition for teaching excellence . She retired as a teacher from Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan , in July 2015.

A NIGHT IN THE REFUGEE CAMP

In the refugee camp of Afghanistan
Scorching days of ‘No Water’
Desperate queue of hours’ hue
Only a bucket per a tent
Lusty eyes of the guard
Craving gesture of all horror
Precondition placed by him
An extra bucket; come for a night
Never a night but explosive fight
Never comes the dawn or peeps the Sun
Shahnaz a girl of fourteen
Awake whole night in a fix
in her tent a bucket for six!
Those five days she needs water more
Restless Shahnaj makes a deal
Better to be the Begum of the guard
Instead of burning every second
Can bathe and wash all her parts
Monthly these days will be stress-free
So what the guard above sixty
Certainly water beyond all needs
Fourteen year Shahnaz chooses the path
Walks to the guard slowly and slowly

స్వప్న బెహరా || A NIGHT IN THE REFUGEE CAMP ||
అనుసృజన: సి.వి. సురేష్ || శరణార్థుల శిబిరం లో ఒక రాత్రి ||
ఆ ఆఫ్ఘన్ శరణార్తుల శిబిరంలో
అవి నీళ్ళు లేక ఎండిపోయిన రోజులు.
గుడారానికంతా ఇచ్చే, ఒక్క బకెట్ నీటి కోసం
గంటల కొద్దీ బారులు తీరి
అరుస్తూ నిస్సహాయంగా ఉండిపోవడమే.
..
అక్కడ, నీటి కాపలాదారుడి కామపు కళ్ళు
కోరికతో చేసే సైగలు భయాన్ని కలిగించేవి.
ఒక అదనపు బకెట్ నీటి కోసం
అతడు పెట్టిన షరతు : ఆ రాత్రికి పక్కలోకి రావాలని!
..
గొడవ తలెత్తని ఏ రాత్రీ లేదు
తగాదా లేని ఏ ఉదయాన సూర్యుడు తొంగి చూడడు!
14 ఏళ్ల షహనాజ్, ఆరవ బకెట్ నీటి కోసం
రాత్రంతా తన గుడారం లోనే
కదలకుండా మేల్కొని ఉండిపోయింది.
ఎందుకంటే, ఆ అయిదు రోజులు
ఆ పిల్లకు నీళ్ళు ఎక్కువగా కావాలిమరి!
..
అలసి పోయిన షహనాజ్ ;
తన దేహభాగాలన్నిటిని స్నానం చేయించి
శుభ్రం చేసుకోవడానికి …
ప్రతి క్షణం వేదనకు గురవ్వడం కంటే,
ఆ కాపలదారుడి భార్య కావడమే మంచిదని
ఓ నిర్ణయానికొచ్చింది
..
నెలసరి ఈ రోజుల్లో
ఎలాంటి వొత్తిడికి గురి కాగూడదంటే
అన్నిటి కంటే ఎక్కువ అవసరం నీళ్ళు.
కాపలదారుడు అరవై ఏళ్ల పైబడైతే నేమి!
పదునాలుగేళ్ళ షహనాజ్ ఆ మార్గాన్నే ఎంచుకుంది .
షహనాజ్ నెమ్మది నెమ్మది గా ఆ వృద్ధుడి వైపు నడిచి
“అంకుల్!” “ మీరు నన్ను వివాహమాడతారా!?”

భావంతో పాటూ బాధనీ
